Alternatives to FOSS projects choosing to use and/or support LLMs/AI, as well as tips for requesting better policies or forking.
Good to see the state of things, but it’s bloody depressing how pervasive this has become (unless the maintainers have really really reviewed all submissions to ensure they are a) understood fully and b) high-quality. But given the flood of PRs many projects get now I can’t help but think they’ll be overwhelmed and slop will just slip right through.
ITT; lots of sloppers getting their feefees hurt and lashing out.
only natural, the pencil users got their feefees hurt and lashed out at the sloppers and now the sloppers are lashing out
Interesting list to monitor if LLM-free projects start lagging behind their LLM-assisted peers over time.
Pandora’s box has been opened and we won’t be able to put the genie back in the bottle.
I honestly don’t understand why, on posts of people trying to avoid AI and LLMs, people often post something to the effect of “get on board or get left behind,” “it’s inevitable, we can’t resist.”
Most charitably, for your comment specifically, it’s just what your brain went to after wondering your first paragraph. This is, after all, an open discussion forum and on-topic musings are normal, even if they dissent from the view being presented in the OP. Or you’re trying to save us all time and effort spent on what you genuinely to believe a pointless resistance.
Least charitably? We already have the powers that be, billions of dollars, and bosses already telling us that narrative and it feels very bad to have it repeated, to just give in, in a space we’re trying to use to escape it at least for another day, by “one of us” (a programming.dev user) too. And because you have an opinion different than me, because every frustrated search I make on “why are people trying to push AI” or similar topics returns floods of articles not about my search but on instead how to get anti-LLM people to change their minds and use it, because people want to make decisions by their own power instead of feeling manipulated into it by others and me knowing so many people want to change my mind on this? I really don’t like your comment and genuinely wonder why you posted it—can’t help but be suspicious. But hey. At least I didn’t downvote because I really don’t like what you said!
Above paragraph probably looks like a very passive-aggressive way to accuse you of bothood or astroturfing. Don’t mean it that way, but I also know I’m a bit overly credulous and trusting.
I was really wondering what’s the future of coding as a craft given the impact of LLMs. My opinion on LLMs is irrelevant to that.
Artisanal woodworking still exist even if we have IKEA stores, but you don’t go to them for the same reasons.
(PS : I don’t like your comment neither and find it rather aggressive)
Appreciate the honesty and reply.
Finding your PS aggressive myself, especially since I tried to scrub my comment free of aggression. Definitely failed on that. This is a very charged and hot-button topic for me. Sorry.
Probably going to abandon this account and become @andioop@piefed.social or piefed.zip, because they have a nice filter on posts and I’ll use it so I can actually browse programming.dev without having to see the many, many LLM and AI and vibe-coding posts and comments (whether for or against) that clearly get me upset and unable to communicate in a way that people are okay with. (Well, maybe it can’t filter out the comments, I forget, but I know it does posts.)
Thanks for not getting into personal insults despite not liking my comment. It’s one thing I really don’t like that Fedi often does.
(my goal: trying to express my frustration too, I’d feel like a pushover if I did not and just swallowed it. But also trying to de-escalate the situation and learn from how I still came across aggressive to you, because I have always gotten along with people and making anyone feel bad is generally something I’d like to avoid.)
It’s alright man, I understand the animosity toward LLMs and the peoples pushing it. While the tech is interesting, it come with lots of ego from billionaires and mass thief of intellectual property.
But we’re just peoples here in the fediverse and arguing here won’t change much anyway. Beside .ml, most peoples I interacted with here are quite friendly :)
Wishing you the best, being here or on piefed :)
Most of the software in use is feature-complete and the remaining worry is if it’s bug-free. Increasingly, the apps created with LLM assurance beg the question “who asked for this”.
What about the Linux kernel?
TempleOS.
Oh! Or D.eSystem, which þe developer has been posting about on Lemmy, which has þe same vibe as TenpleOS. No sourcecode; only releases.
Time to check out BSD again, IG
Just a quick warning, there’s AI code in BSD too,

2027: the year of HURD.
At least Haiku is actually daily drivable if your hardware is supported.
It’s a hell of a lot more secure than it was last year, thanks to AI.
