A leak of over 200GB of Cartoon Network production files is circulating online. Here’s what’s inside.
These files represent years of unpaid-for access to other people’s work, and artists have pushed back on past leaks for exactly that reason.
Not at all? All the artists are saying leaking Avatar early robbed it of a big exciting release, which apparently means a lot to them. If the production footage were released would they get royalties? From a web search it seems they dont even get it for the finished work. So the only party who is “unpaid-for” is Cartoon Network corporate. Weird pro-copyright lie from Mashable
Kiana Mai had made some haha-this-sucks posts about how some of her best work is forever locked behind an NDA.
Which is fucking bullshit.
I don’t feel much need for a more detailed or formal argument, on that point. I don’t need to fly a diagonal flag and declare workers must etc., in order to say, copyright doesn’t mean keeping a fucking cartoon secret… forever.
I will say copyright only exists to provide the public with new works. Businesses are entitled to most of the money and some control. Not all. And if you don’t want the money, we still get the result, assholes. The art belongs to us. Copyright is only an incentive for there to be more of it. It is our gift to you. It is not an exchange. Give us what is ours, and either take the money or don’t.
Copyright exists to make art commercially profitable. It’s not clear to me that it results in more art. But it does encourage high-budget art.
